Fishing reports should be used as a general guide. Fishing condtions change on a day to day basis but these reports should give you an overview of what's going on. February 8, 2010 Fly Fishing News and Updates for Maine
Striped Bass and Bluefin Tuna Fishing:
Tuna -As of now the Bluefin tuna regulations for the season remain the same as 2009. We typically fish the small- med. sized tuna on heavy fly tackle and heavy spinning rod set-ups. 14-16wt fly rods are standard and I'm looking at some new and heavier outfits for handleing these amazing fish. Just because we use the term "heavy" it does not mean the rod has to be heavy on our arms and wrists. New lighter and stronger bluewater rods are being developed, some with a mix of glass in the blanks that make these big rods much nicer to cast.
I'm also proud to announce being selected to join the Hatch Pro-Staff. Hatch has joined the fly fishing industry with top of the line performance in fly reel production and I was very impressed when we broke the new 12plus reel in on a recent trip to Panama. I look forward to having them on board for the 2010 Bluefin season.
Tuna season typically begins here in Maine the end of July and runs well into Oct.
My tuna season is booking up quickly with a few days left scattered in Aug. and some great dates still available in Sept. Please contact me soon if you plan to fish tuna this year.
Striped Bass- Striped bass fishing runs mid-June through Sept. We will be attending meetings this month to discuss new striped bass regulations for Maine this year. Many of us feel the need to go back to the old 36" and over rule to lower mortality in the striper stock. We did well last season fishing stripers here in Casco Bay but the overall population make up has shifted from a stock that was comprised of many small fish to a population of bigger fish. this concerns us as we seem to be missing the stocks of smaller bass that replace these bigger fish as the population evolves.
I will be at the Bears Den Fly Show in MA. on Feb 20th this year representing Hatch and Airflow lines, please stop by and say Hello.
Tight Lines and I look forward to seeing you all again this year on the water,
